Senior 2 Senior Adoption Program

If you are 65 years of age or older and are interested in adopting a senior (7 years of age or older) pet, then the Beaver County Humane Society’s (BCHS) Senior 2 Senior program may be right for you!

The companionship of a pet can increase the quality of our life because they provide friendship and open opportunities for social interaction which is important for our health regardless of our age. Research shows that owning a pet reduces depression, lowers blood pressure, reduces stress, and helps people deal with loss/grief. The routine of caring for a pet gives structure and purpose to daily life and incorporates regular exercise into the day.
Senior pets are often the most well-suited for older adults, as older pets are gentler, calmer, have an established demeanor, are more likely to be house-trained, and usually understands at least basic commands.

BCHS’ Senior 2 Senior program is designed to provide rescued senior animals with wonderful, loving homes with people over the age of 65. In today’s world, we know that there are many older adults who live very active, healthy lives and do not need any assistance with adopting a pet, accessing veterinary care, or affording all the things that go along with having a pet. However, we also know that some older adults may not be able to drive, may not have access to a computer, and may be on a limited income, all of which create barriers to pet ownership and/or care. It is primarily this last group of people for whom this program was designed, although anyone over the age of 65 is welcome to participate.

If you choose to participate in the Senior 2 Senior program, you will receive:

  • A free adoption of a dog or cat seven years of age or older (as available) *
  • Initial veterinary and dental care
  • A Senior 2 Senior Welcome Kit which includes a collar, leash, toys, bowls, and a starter supply of food
  • A BCHS staff member’s phone number that you can call if you are having challenges getting your new pet settled into your home
  • The love of a new pet who will be grateful to you for bringing him/her into your home

Some adoptions may require a home visit by a BCHS staff member prior to adoption approval to ensure that the adoption will be successful for both the animal and the person wishing to adopt.

If you are interested in participating in the Senior 2 Senior program, complete the Senior 2 Senior Adoption Application or call 724-775-5801 and press 3.

*We cannot guarantee availability of a senior animal at the time you submit your application. However, your application will be held until a suitable senior pet becomes available.
